SUC Olympic III - Central Luzon

The State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) is one of the inter-collegiate sports associations in the Philippines closely related to UAAP, is the union of six major state colleges and universities in Metro Manila.

The organization was established as the State Colleges Athletic Association (SCAA) in 1953 encompassing the Philippine Normal College (now Philippine Normal University or PNU), Central Luzon Agricultural College (CLAC), (now Central Luzon State University or CLSU), and the Philippine College of Commerce (now Polytechnic University of the Philippines or PUP).

SCAA saw itself transformed into SCUAA in the 1970s when PCC and the Philippine College of Arts and Trades (now Technological University of the Philippines or TUP) a member school since 1959, converted into a university.

Despite many years of challenges in the forefront, SCUAA was able to gain ground in various regions in the country through the creation of regional or satellite SCUAA, hence the establishment of a National SCUAA in the mid-1980s. Two years after, the first National SCUAA was held with member state colleges and universities from Regions I, IV, V, VIII, and NCR participating.

Visit to Hikawa Maru

Hikawa Maru (氷川丸) is a Japanese ocean liner that was built for the Nippon Yusen KK line by the Yokohama Dock Company. She was launched on 30 September 1929, and made her maiden voyage from Kobe to Seattle on 13 May 1930.She is one of three sister ships, all named after important Shinto shrines, Hikawa Shrine being located in Saitama. The other two, both lost in the war, were Heian Maru and Hie Maru.
The service provided on the ship was famous for combining splendid food and beautiful art deco interiors. She was often referred to as the Queen of the Pacific. Charlie Chaplin and Kano Jigoro (founder of Judo) are amongst the ship's more notable former passengers.

Hikawa Maru as a Hospital Ship, After Japan's entry to the war Hikawa Maru became a hospital ship, and as a result, she ultimately survived the Allied campaign against the Japanese merchant fleet. After the end of the war she was used by the U.S. for troop repatriation until 1947.Afterwards the Hikawa Maru was returned to Japan and carried cargo between Japan and the US.
In 1954 she was taken out of service, but following a refit she returned to carrying passengers across the Pacific. Falling passenger numbers due to the growth of air travel led to the eventual termination of the service in 1960.

In 1961 Hikawa Maru became a floating youth hostel and museum permanently berthed at Yokohama.
In December 2006 the Hikawa Maru museum was closed and doubts about her future were raised. Happily, NYK Line began the restoration of the Hikawa Maru in August 2007, and the ship was reopened to the public on 25 April 2008, the vessel's 78th birthday.

Going back to my Alma Mater
The faces may change, but the feeling’s still the same
24th of August 2009... Monday

It was a blast going back for the first time since I graduated 3 years ago. It took me the whole afternoon walking around the academy and photographing the old and new buildings, places where I have fond memories of.

A visit to PMMA enabled me to see my former home for three years, from the Admin to the Academic building, to Mess hall next to the battalion, and to the Quarter deck.

My Alma mater has changed since I graduated but the beauty of it, plus the friendliness of the people remain.!

Why after all this year I came back here? Not because I will apply as tactical officer or instructor, nor I am getting married and in need of a sword sponsor. The real reason is…

That after almost 3 years from graduation, I finally got my DIPLOMA…

Noise all over the surroundings is present;
Their sounds are all erring to my ear.
But there’s one tune that caught my awareness.
The sounds of dough, the call of the sea.

As I listened to its tricky tune,
It drove me closer to its source of power.
It neither looks as a flamenco or a mambo;
But it made me dance “loca” by its enticing songs.

Here comes the prelude:
Songs of disparage, songs of yell;
But it seems that its music really haunts me.

Two years of untiring strain
Same old tune and same old pitch
And here comes the sound of the waves, the winds;
And finally, the sea.

After various unchained melodies,
I thought I’ll already go back with a sweet tune to see.
But all of a sudden on my certainty,
“Unevitable changes” in my Academy.

“Many were called but few were chosen”
To sing with the music of the midshipmen’s hymn.
The coda is now playing so let us all be reminded,
That whatever things may have gone onto our way,
The last stanza of our life here in the Academy;

PMMA relentlessly doing its best to keep pace with change, it employs all the indispensable strategies including creativeness and innovation to achieve its vision. Consequently, at the dawn of the 21st century the PMMA Training Center, a "one stop shop" training center had been put into the drawing board.

The fate destined the pursuance of this project that after a short while the Financial Cooperation between the German Government and the Philippines has been approved. PMMA Training Center development site has been funded, modern simulator has been acquired and safety center has been built, to cater the maritime education and training of the Filipino seafarers.

All the training courses prescribed by the relevant international conventions, national, flag state and shipping companies requirements are offered by the PMMA training center. In addition, it could develop courses suitable to the training needs of the costumers.

The STCW 95 requirements as to the competence based training and assessment has been complied with this one stop shop training center, because it employs virtual reality, the most effective learning aids i.e. the simulator.

The successful fortification of PMMA training center will nurture the Filipino seafarer to remain competitive in terms of competence, skills and discipline. Thus, increase international acceptance and boast the national economy.

CRUISE SHIP - Freedom Class (Independence of the Seas)

MS Independence of the Seas is a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, which entered service in April 2008. The 15-deck ship can accommodate 4,370 passengers served by 1,360 crew. She was built in the Aker Finnyards drydock in Turku, Finland, builder of Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas, her sister ships of the Freedom Class. At 154,407 gross tons, she joined Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas as the largest cruise ships and passenger vessels ever built (at the time of construction). She is 1,112 feet (339m) long, and typically cruises at 21.6 knots (40 km/h). The vessel operates from Southampton, England.

Independence of the Seas is the third of the Freedom Class vessels. In 2009, the first in a new Oasis Class of ships is slated to displace the Freedom class as the world's largest passenger ships. Independence of the Seas, as of current, is the world's largest passenger cruise ship.

Independence of the Seas features an interactive water park (including the FlowRider onboard wave generator for surfing), a dedicated sports pool (for volleyball and basketball), and whirlpools which extend from the ship's sides. An internal street lined with shops, pubs and wine bars. An innovative "bridge" can be loweredfrom the ceiling void to provide a performance space above the crowds. A three story theatre the Alhambra seating 1,200, there is a complete conference centre, The show cabaret lounge is based on an ancient egyptian theme, known as the Prymid Lounge. A brand new Mortag sports car is bolted to the floor outside of the vintages wine bar . On a lower level is an ice skating rink ( home to a series of highly professional ice shows) and also available for personal skating. She also features a coffee shop and bookstore, Sorrento's Pizzeria, and a Ben and Jerry's ice cream shop. Other amenities will be a rock climbing wall, ice skating rink, Wi-Fi capabilities throughout the ship, flat screen televisions in all staterooms, and cell phone connectivity. Independence of the Seas is also the first Royal Caribbean ship to feature heated, fresh water pools.

Independence of the Seas is based at Southampton, United Kingdom. After doing some preview sailings from Oslo, Norway, Southampton, UK and Hamburg, Germany, her itineraries will alternate between Mediterranean treasures and Italian Mediterranean itineraries, both 14 nights in length. She will also do three 4-night sailings to Cork, Ireland. In the Autumn she will do three 11-night sailings to the Canary Islands. During the winter months Independence of the Seas will be based at Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

AIRCRAFT CARRIER - USS Enterprise

USS Enterprise (CVN-65), formerly CV

A(N)-65, is the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the eighth U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name. Like her predecessor of World War II fame, she is nicknamed the "Big E." At 1,123feet (342.3m), she is the longest naval vessel in the world, though her 93,500tons displacement places her as the second heaviest supercarrier, surpassed only by the Nimitz-class.

Enterprise is currently homeported at Norfolk, Virginia. As one of the oldest carriers in the fleet, she is scheduled for decommissioning in 2014-2015. Her intended replacement is the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78). Her current commanding officer is Captain Ronald Horton.

In 1958 Enterprise’s keel was laid at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. On September 24, 1960 the ship was launched for the first time, sponsored by Mrs. W. B. Franke, wife of the former Secretary of the Navy. On November 25, 1961 the Enterprise was commissioned, with Captain Vincent P. DePoix in command. On January 12, 1962 the ship then made its maiden voyage conducting a three-month shakedown cruise. After commissioning, Enterprise began a lengthy series of tests and training exercises designed to determine the full capabilities of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

USS Enterprise is scheduled to be decommissioned in 2014-2015, with the exact year dependent on the state of the nuclear fuel currently in the carrier’s reactors. The subsequent fate of Enterprise is, as of yet, unknown. One possibility is that the CVN-65 may end up as an aircraft-carrier museum ship, because Enterprise is the world’s first nuclear powered aircraft carrier and the only remaining ship in the lineage of U.S. Navy ships named Enterprise. It is also possible that she could end up in the Ship-Submarine recycling program, in which case Enterprise would become the first nuclear powered carrier to be dismantled as part of the program.

Because of the huge cost of her construction, Enterprise was launched and commissioned without the planned Terrier missile launchers. These were never installed and the ship’s self-defense suite instead consisted of three shorter ranged RIM-7 Sea Sparrow, Basic Point Defense Missile System (BPDMS) launchers. Later upgraded to carry two NATO Sea Sparrow (NSSM) and three Mk. 71 Phalanx CIWS gun mounts. One CIWS mount was later removed and two 21 cell RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile launchers were added.

BULK CARRIER - BERGE STAHL

The MS Berge Stahl is the largest bulk carrier ship in the world. She is registered in Stavanger, Norway. She was previously registered in Monrovia, Liberia.

An iron ore carrier, the Berge Stahl has a capacity of 364,767 metric tons of deadweight (DWT) she was built in 1986 by Hyundai Heavy Industries. The Berge Stahl is 1,122 feet (343 m) long, has a beam, or width, of 208.3 feet (65 m), and a draft, or depth in the water, of 23 m.

Her Hyundai B&W 7L90MCE diesel engine is 30feet (9 m) high, drives a single 30foot (9 m) screw, and puts out 27,610 horsepower (20.59 MW), has a top speed of 13.5 knots, and has a 30foot (9 m) high rudder.

She is owned by the Norwegian shipping company Bergesen d.y. ASA.

Because of her massive size, the Berge Stahl can only tie up, fully loaded, at two ports in the world, hauling ore from the Terminal Marítimo de Ponta da Madeira in Brazil to the Europoort near Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Even at these ports, passage must be timed to coincide with high tides to prevent the ship running aground. The Berge Stahl makes this trip about ten times each year, or a round-trip about every five weeks. In September of 2006, the ship carried ore to the port of Majishan, China, where she was dry-docked and given her twenty-year inspection. On the return voyage to Rotterdam, she picked up a partial load of ore in Dampier, Western Australia, and Saldanha Bay in South Africa (where the maximum depth permitted is 21 m).

OCEAN LINER - QUEEN MARY 2

The RMS Queen Mary 2 (QM2) is a Cunard Line ocean liner named after the earlier Cunard liner Queen Mary, which was in turn named after Mary of Teck, the Queen Consort of George V. At the time of her construction in 2003 by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique, the QM2 was the longest, widest and tallest passenger ship ever built, and at a gross tonnage(GT)of148,528tons, was also the largest. She lost the gross tonnage distinction to Royal Caribbean International's 154,407GT Freedom of the Seas in April 2006, but QM2 remains the largest ocean liner (as opposed to cruise ship) ever built, and her width, length, and waterline breadth are unsurpassed by any other passenger ship. Also, the QM2 displaces approximately 76,000 tons; the Royal Caribbean Freedom ships displace about 64,000 tons.

The Queen Mary 2 is the current Cunard flagship and makes regular transatlantic crossings. The ship was constructed to complement the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2)—the Cunard flagship from 1969 to 2004—replacing it on the transatlantic route. The first RMSQueen Mary sailed the Atlantic from 1936 to 1967. QM2 had the Royal Mail Ship (RMS) title conferred on her, as a gesture to Cunard's history, by Royal Mail when she entered service in 2004 on the Southampton to New York route.

On 12 January 2004, the Queen Mary 2 set sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the United States, carrying 2,620 passengers under the command of her first captain Ronald Warwick, who had previously commanded the Queen Elizabeth 2. Warwick is the son of William (Bil) Warwick who had also been a Cunard officer and had also been the QE2's first captain.

During the XXVIII Olympics the QM2 sailed to Athens and docked at Piraeus for two weeks for use as a hotel-ship, serving the then Prime Minister of the UK Tony Blair and his wife Cherie, the French President Jacques Chirac, US president George H. W. Bush, and the US Olympic men's basketball team.

In January 2006 the QM2 embarked on a circumnavigation of South America (the ship is too large to pass through the Panama Canal). Upon departure from Fort Lauderdale one of her propeller pods was damaged when it struck a channel wall, forcing the ship to sail at a reduced speed, which resulted in Commodore Warwick's decision to skip several calls on its voyage to Rio de Janeiro. Many of her passengers threatened to stage a sit-in protest because of the missed calls, before Cunard offered to refund the voyage costs. The QM2 continued to operate at a reduced service speed, and several itinerary changes were necessary until repairs had been completed after the ship returned to Europe in June, where the QM2 paid a visit to dry dock, and the damaged propeller pod was unseated. In November the QM2 was dry-docked once more at the Blohm + Voss yard in Hamburg (drydock Elbe 17) for the reinstallation of the repaired propeller pod. At the same time, sprinkler systems were installed in all of the vessel's balconies to comply with new safety regulations which had come into effect since the MV Star Princess fire. Additionally, both bridge wings were extended by 2 metres to improve visibility.

After completing the journey around South America, on 23 February 2006, the QM2 met her namesake, the original RMS Queen Mary, which is permanently docked at Long Beach, California. Escorted by a flotilla of smaller ships, the two Queens exchanged a "whistle salute" which was heard throughout the city of Long Beach.

On 10 January 2007 the QM2 started her first world cruise, circling the globe in 81 days. On 20 February, she met her fleet-mate, the Queen Elizabeth 2, also on her 2007 world cruise, in Sydney harbour. This is the first time two Cunard Queens have been together in Sydney since the original Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth served as troop ships in 1941. Despite the early arrival time of 5:42 am, the QM2's presence attracted so many viewers that the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Anzac Bridge were blocked. With 1,600 passengers leaving the ships in Sydney, Cunard estimated the stopovers injected more than $1 million into the local economy.

Famous passengers and/or guests of the QM2 include Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, former French President Jacques Chirac, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, jazz musician Dave Brubeck, former US president George H. W. Bush, comedian and actor John Cleese, actor Richard Dreyfuss, author and editor Harold Evans, director George Lucas, singer Carly Simon, singer Rod Stewart, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric, and financier Donald Trump.

Following the retirement of QE2, Queen Mary 2 will be the only operational ocean liner left in active passenger service.

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door.

SON: 'Daddy, may I ask you a question?'

DAD: 'Yeah sure, what it is?' replied the man.

SON: 'Daddy, how much do you make an hour?'

DAD: 'That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?' the man said angrily.

SON: 'I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?'

DAD: 'If you must know, I make $50 an hour.'

SON: 'Oh,' the little boy replied, with his head down.

SON: 'Daddy, may I please borrow $25?'

The father was furious, 'If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don't work hard every day for such childish frivolities. '

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.

The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?

After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down , and started to think:

Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $25.00 and he really didn't ask for money very often The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.

'Are you asleep, son?' He asked.

'No daddy, I'm awake,' replied the boy.

'I've bee n thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier' said the man. 'It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here's the $25 you asked for.'

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. 'Oh, thank you daddy!' he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills.

The man saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again.

The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father.

'Why do you want more money if you already have some?' the father grumbled.

'Because I didn't have enough, but now I do,' the little boy replied.

'Daddy, I have $50 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.'

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness.

It's just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life. We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Do remember to share that $50 worth of your time with someone you love.

If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of hours. But the family & friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

CONTAINER - EMMA MERSK

Emma Mærsk is a container ship owned by the A. P. Moller-Maersk Group. When she was launched, Emma Mærsk was the largest container ship ever built, and as of 2008 the longest ship in use. Officially, Emma Mærsk is able to carry around 11,000twenty-foot equivalent units(TEU) according to the Maersk company's method of calculating capacity, which is about 1,400 more containers than any other ship is capable of carrying.

By normal calculations, Emma Mærsk's cargo capacity is significantly greater than the listed capacity — between 13,500twenty-foot equivalent units(TEU) and 15,200TEU. The difference between the official and estimated numbers is because Maersk calculates the capacity of a container ship by weight (in this case, 14 tons/container) that can be carried on a vessel. For the Emma Mærsk, this is 11,000 containers. Other companies calculate the capacity of a container ship according to the maximum number of containers that can be put on the ship, independent of the weight of the containers. This number is always greater than the number calculated by the Maersk method.

The ship was built at the Odense Steel Shipyard in Denmark. In June 2006, during construction, welding work caused a fire within her superstructure. It spread rapidly through the accommodation section and bridge.

Emma Mærsk was named in a ceremony on August 12, 2006. The ship is named after Emma Mærsk, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller's late wife. The ship set sail on her maiden voyage on 8 September 2006 at 02:00 hours from Aarhus, calling at Gothenburg, Bremerhaven, Rotterdam, Algeciras, the Suez Canal, and arrived in Singapore on 1 October 2006 at 20:05 hours.

Emma Mærsk departed Singapore the next day, headed for Yantian in Shenzhen. She sailed on to Kobe, Nagoya, arrived at Yokohama on 10 October 2006, and returned via Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Tanjung Pelepas, the Suez Canal, Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Gothenburg and finally to Aarhus, with arrival at that port 11 November 2006 at 16:00 hours.

She appeared in headlines prior to Christmas 2006, when she was dubbed SS Santa because she was bound for the United Kingdom from China loaded with Christmas goods. The return journey after Christmas 2006 saw her return to southern China, loaded with UK waste destined for recycling in China.

Her appearance in the news prompted China's State Environmental Protection Administration to promise to "closely watch the progress of investigation into the dumping of garbage in south China by Britain". It added that no official approval had been given to any company in the area to import waste.

Emma Maersk's regular round trip involves Ningbo, Xiamen, Hong Kong (westbound), Yantian (westbound), Tanjung Pelepas (westbound), Algeciras (westbound), Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Algeciras (eastbound), Tanjung Pelepas (eastbound), Yantian (eastbound), Hong Kong (eastbound) and Ningbo.

SUPERTANKER - KNOCK NEVIS

The Knock Nevis is a floating storage and offloading unit (FSO) currently owned by the Norwegian company Fred Olsen Production. The unit was previously a supertanker and as such held the record for the world's largest ship. As a tanker the ship was known under the names Seawise Giant, Happy Giant, and Jahre Viking.

Knock Nevis was built in 1979 at Sumitomo Heavy Industries's Oppama shipyard as Seawise Giant. The ship was built for a Greek owner who was unable to take delivery of the ship.

The shipyard then exercised its right to sell the ship. A deal was brokered with Hong Kong shipping magnate C. Y. Tung founder of the shipping line Orient Overseas Container Line.

A deal was reached, but Tung required the ship's size be increased by several metres in length and 87,000 metric tons of cargo capacity by jumboisation. Two years later, the vessel was launched and named Seawise Giant.

After the refit, the ship had a capacity of 564,763 metric tons of deadweight (DWT), a length overall of 458.45metres (1,504.1ft) and a draft of 24.611metres (80.74ft). She had 46 tanks, 31,541square metres (339,500sqft) of deck space, and was too large to pass through the English Channel.

From 1979 to 2004, she was owned by the company Loki Stream AS. During this period she flew the Norwegian flag.

In this period, she was renamed Happy Giant from 1989 to 1991.

Jorden Jahre bought the ship in 1991 for the sum of US$39 Million. It was at this stage that the ship was renamed Jahre Viking. It was sold in 2004.

The ship was damaged during the Iran–Iraq War while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. As a result she was declared a total loss and laid up in Brunei. At the end of the war, she was towed to the Keppel Company shipyard in Singapore, repaired, and renamed Happy Giant. The ship was sailing again in October 1991.

In 2004, she was bought by First Olsen Tankers Pte. Ltd., renamed Knock Nevis and converted into a permanently moored storage tanker.On November 30, 2004 the conversion to FSO was completed. Since 2004, she has been owned by First Olsen Tankers Pte. Ltd. The ship is now permanently moored in the Qatar Al Shaheen oil field in the Persian Gulf, operating as an FSO.

In terms of length, Knock Nevis has a length overall of 458.45m (1,504ft), making her the largest ship ever constructed. The vessel is longer than many of the world's tallest buildings are tall, for example the Petronas Twin Towers at 452metres (1,480ft). She is smaller than the Sears Tower at 527.3 metres (1,730ft), and Taipei 101 at 509.2metres (1,671ft), and considerably smaller than the skyscraper Burj Dubai, currently under construction, at 636metres (2,090ft).

DUBAI DRY DOCK EXPERIENCE

Last April we went to Dubai for Dry dock, which means they lift the ship out of the water to do maintenance. Located in one of the rapidly developing regions of the world and a busy trading route, Drydocks World – Dubai is one of the most prolific shipyards in operation. The shipyard is the largest facility in the Middle East. During this time we worked for about 2 weeks doing 10 hour shifts. The work was very intense and non-stop.

We would wire brush and chip rust all day in the heat. After awhile you felt like a machine. The nice thing is after 5 months of sailing with only the seas of middle east to far east, finally the taste of solid ground again.

At one point we had to go down inside the tank for inspection. We go into the gas freed tank on board. Two men have to be in there to make sure they take out all the slops properly, other wise they have to clean it again. I was one of those unlucky guys. The space is very cramped, dark and hot. I had to go up and down with a huge torch with me. The combination of having to use large amounts of energy to climb up and down in the ladder, the dust filled air, and the piping hot chain made this an extremely exhausting experience. No lie, at one point I was seriously wondering how much more my body could take before shutting down. Thank God nothing serious happened. I had a new understanding of what hell may be like, and it was not fun at all.

The high light of dry dock is going ashore, Dubai was a great experience. Very hot and humid, but lots to see and do. We log-out in to our ship at about 1800H. We didn't waste a second and saw a lot of Dubai.

It's a really clean and tidy place and a massive amount of construction going on. It's like a competition of who can build the biggest and most breathtaking buildings. There is no such thing as a 'plain' building in Dubai - it's really an eye opener.

We then spent the night touring around the largest mall in the world the Dubai Mall. It was a little bit tiring, I was surprise seeing our kababayan everywhere , there's a time that you will feel your in Divisoria or Shoemart, but fun all the same. The next couple of days we do shopping I bought some good stuffs a 48" Plasma TV a Home Theater and PS3 160gb. Others tried a different kind of fun. Dubai's infamous night life. I will not go into details but let's just say it's a great experience..

All in al it was a revitalizing experience, a memorable one and hope to experience it all over again.

Two Half Hitches

This reliable knot is quickly tied and is the hitch most often used in mooring. To tie:

* Pass the end of a rope around a post or other object.

* Wrap the short end of rope under and over the long part of rope, pushing the end down through the loop. This is a half hitch.

* Repeat on the long rope, below first half hitch, and draw tight.

Bowline
This knot does not jam or slip when tied properly. To tie:

* Make the overhand loop with the end held toward you, then pass the end through the loop.
* Now, pass the end up behind the standing part, then down through the loop again.
* Draw tight.

Figure Eight
This knot is ideal for keeping the end of a rope from running out of a tackle or pulley. To tie:

As I was browsing my old stuff, I found old photos of my friends and teachers. It's really nice reminiscing this period of my life. Its there I met a lot of true people and real friends. There were also a lot of down moments but in general its a bliss.

Love is when you take away the feeling, the passion, and the romance in relationship – and find out that you still care for that person. A sad thing in life you meet someone who means a lot to you, only to find out in the end that it was not meant to be, and you just have to let go. When the door of happiness is closes, another opens, but oftentimes we look so long on the closed door that we do not see the one, which has opened for us. The best kind of friend is the kind whom you sit on the porch and swing with; never say a word, and then walk away the feeling like the best conversation you ever had. It is true that we do not know what we have until we lose it, but it is also true that we do not know what we have been missing until it arrives. Giving someone all your love is not an assurance that they will love you back. Do not expect love in return; just wait until it grows in their hearts. But if it does not, be contented that it grew in yours. There are things you would like to hear that you would never hear from the person whom you would like to hear them from, but do not be so deaf as not to hear it from the one who says it from his heart. Never say goodbye if you still want to try. Never give up if you feel you can go on. Never say you do not love a person anymore if you cannot let go. Love come to those who still hope although they have been disappointed, to those who still believe although they have been betrayed, to those who still love although they have been hurt before. I am a valuable because God created me with an inner value and worth. I do not have to earn it.

I improve my self-respect when I understand and accept that I have the basic inner value. The value is here. I don’t have to achieve it. I already have it. My challenge is to nurture and protect my inner value from getting jade or twisted by the misplaced values of a success at any cost oriented society.

If I can avoid the trap of trying to possess success or adorn myself with success at the expense of others, I can easily acquire self-respect. It is important to me to do things that project my inner value to other people.

My worth is my word. I make commitments, and I do what I say I will do. This is more important to me, it is crucial.

I say to others, “I am valuable as you are valuable will make a value of exchange. I will offer you the best I have and I hope you will give your best in return.”

TOKYO — A suspected pirate ship fired on a Japanese oil tanker today off the eastern coast of Yemen, leaving a hole from which hundreds of gallons of fuel leaked, officials said. No one was injured.

The 150,000-ton tanker Takayama ( with 3/off Rodcyn Yumang) was attacked about 270 miles off the coast of Aden in southwestern Yemen while it was heading for Saudi Arabia, its Japanese operator, Nippon Yusen K.K., said in a statement.

None of its 23 crew members — seven Japanese and 16 Filipinos — were injured, the company said. The vessel left the South Korean port of Ulsan on April 4.

She said the tanker was heading to Aden for repairs, and its itinerary could change depending on the extent of the damage.

Transportation Ministry official Yoichi Oda said the attackers were believed to be pirates whose motive was not immediately known. The waters in the Gulf of Aden between Yemen and Somalia are considered prone to pirate attacks.

In late October, a Panamanian-registered chemical tanker operated by a Japanese shipping company was seized by pirates in nearby waters off Somalia's coast. All but one of its 23 crew members were freed unharmed in mid-December.

More than 260 vessels, including 10 Japanese ships, were attacked by pirates last year worldwide, Oda said, quoting International Maritime Bureau figures. Nearly 40 percent of the pirate attacks occurred off the coasts of Somalia, Nigeria and Yemen, where the number of incidents surged from the previous year.

Kyodo News agency said the tanker was hit by a rocket fired from a small boat.

One of the lesser-known industries in which Filipinos dominate globally is the seafaring industry. According to this GMA News article, the Philippines accounts for 28% of the world’s shipping crew with about 250,000 officers and crew members. In a distant second is the whole Indian subcontinent which only has 100,000 people employed in the industry. Filipinos so dominate the crew members of the world’s ships that whenever a ship or tanker anywhere capsizes or is overrun by pirates, expect that Filipinos will be affected. In addition, Filipino seafarers remit about $1 billion to the country, annually. Future projections indicate that there will be a big rise in demand for seafarers and the Philippines is trying to keep up with the demand.

Among the more than 100 schools in the country that offer degrees in B.S. Marine Transportation or B.S. Marine Engineering, it is the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA), whose campus is located in San Narciso, Zambales, is I think the most reputable in the country. This 188-year-old institution was created by a Spanish Royal Decree on January 1, 1820 and was named the Escuela Nautica de Manila with its campus inside Intramuros in Manila. The American colonial government renamed it as the Nautical School of the Philippine Islands and then as the Philippine Nautical School before gaining its present name under Republic Act No. 3680 in 1963.

Interestingly, despite being a school that produces graduates mostly hired in the private sector, the PMMA has a military-style education reminiscent of the Philippine Military Academy. Because of this, PMMA graduates are often directly hired as ship officers in commercial vessels and are automatic reserve officers in the Philippine Navy and the Philippine Coast Guard.

But all is not well in this maritime educational institution. The biggest blow to PMMA’s reputation was when it failed the Commission on Higher Education’s 2001 accreditation of the 1995 International Convention on Seafarers’ Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW ’95) (see news article). The PMMA has since undergone efforts, with the help of the alumni association, to improve the standing of the Academy.

Long-Arm Weighted Crunch
This abs exercise targets your upper abs. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Hold a light dumbbell in each hand and extend your arms straight back beyond your head. Now crunch your rib cage toward your pelvis, keeping your shoulders still and your arms straight. Don't generate momentum with your arms. Perform 12 to 15 repetitions.

Seated Ab Crunch
Sit on the edge of a bench. Grip the edge of the pad and lean back slightly, extending your legs down and away and keeping your heels 4 to 6 inches off the floor. Bend your knees and slowly raise your legs toward your chest. At the same time, lean forward with your upper body, allowing your chest to approach your thighs. Return to the starting position. Perform three sets of 12 repetitions.

Corkscrew
This abs exercise targets both the lower abs and the obliques. Lie on your back, with your legs raised directly over your hips. Your knees should be slightly bent. Place your hands at your sides with the palms down. Use your lower abs to raise your hips off the floor and toward your rib cage, elevating your feet straight up. Simultaneously twist your hips to the right. Hold, then return to the starting position. Repeat, twisting to the left. Do 10 repetitions to each side.

Weighted One-Sided Crunch
This abs exercise targets both the upper abs and the obliques. Lie with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor, and hold a dumbbell with both hands by your right shoulder. Curl your torso up and rotate to the left. Lower yourself, finish the set on that side, then switch directions and repeat, holding the dumbbell next to your left shoulder. Perform three sets of eight repetitions to each side.

Kneeling Cable Crunch
Kneel facing the pulley and hold the ends of a rope attached to the high cable along the sides of your face. Bend forward, aiming your chest at your pelvis. Return to the starting position, then repeat the movement, this time aiming your chest toward your left knee. Return, then repeat to your right. That's one repetition. Perform three sets of eight repetitions.

Crunch/Side-Bend Combo
This exercise targets both the upper abs and the obliques. Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet on the floor, and hands behind your ears. Curl up so your shoulder blades are off the floor. Bend at the waist to your left, aiming your left armpit toward your left hip. Straighten, then bend to your right. Lower yourself to the starting position and repeat. Perform three sets of eight repetitions to each side.

my love story started way back in 1987(in ilocos norte) when i was in highschool. i was in third year high school then. im not a braggart but i was always at the top of my class back then, so this must be the reason though i am not that good looking that our class muse became my girlfriend. we got steady all the way to our first year of college. to tell you the truth, i enrolled to the university where she enrolled for the reason that i wanted to be with her, because i love her very much( aside from her being sexy and beautiful, shes also sweet ).

As ive done in my highschool days i was given a full scholarship by the university(both my girlfriend and me took up bs elementary educ, though im not really inclined to take up that course; i just wanted to be near her) I did a good job of studying that i maintained my deanslister status and i know my gf is proud of me but my disillusionment to my course took a different route.

Just before the break on my first year college ive got the chance to take an examination at Philippine merchant marine academy in fort bonifacio and luckily i passed. i took the courage to tell this to my gf hoping that she will support my decision to study here in manila but she countered by saying that since i was a deans lister it is better to finish my course and teach someday. but i insisted on my decision to study in manila to take up marine eng'g and be a seaman someday and this is also for our future! she couldnt do anything but we promised to keep our communication and to keep ourselves from temptations to make our love stronger.

To make the story short, i kept my promise to her while im still studying in PMMA. but i didnt tell her that on my second year in the academy, every cadets(thats what we call ourselves) will have his cadetship program onboard an international sea going vessel for 1 year.
this i told her when i went home in ilocos and paid her a visit( i only have two weeks left before i go onboard) she cried but i made sure we spent the remaining days together happily!

Upon leaving for my assigned ship( i joined port in lisbon, portugal, and my assigned ship is a tanker, that was in 1991) i called her from the airport through phone but her mom told me she didnt want to talk to me! i left with a heavy heart!

while im having my cadetship onboard i never forgot to send her anything that would remind her that i love her( letters, postcards, pictures of me in different countries, etc) but 3 months before my cadetship is over her letters ceased. i tried to call her once when we were in houston but her mom said shes out of the house. i just concluded shes busy! I even bought her a teddybear for my "pasalubong" to her when i get home.

April 4 1992, i got home in ilocos with the teddy bear for my love. I planned of not going to their house but to the university where we both enrolled before to surprise her and to see my former classmates also! the first person i talked to was our(me and my gf) bestfriend who knows of our relationship and who happened to be her neighbor. I ask her where is Rose( her full name is rosebella) but i was shocked when she (our bestfriend) told me that rose is PREGNANT!!! She dropped out of school before Christmas break! all my bestfriend knew is that we broke up before i left!

The teddy bear!? well i gave it to my niece! As for me, i never bothered to ask or confront rose what happened. All i know is my heart stopped beating from that time until just recently when i woke up from that traumatic slumber. Im now 34 years old going to 35 and still single and looking for someone to be with the rest of my life! and im still battling those gigantic waves at sea to have a better life ahead( im a second engr onboard) im on vacation right now!

‘Filipino Monkey’ may be behind radio threats, ship drivers say

The threatening radio transmission heard at the end of a video showing harassing maneuvers by Iranian patrol boats in the Strait of Hormuz may have come from a locally famous heckler known among ship drivers as the “Filipino Monkey.”

Since the Jan. 6 incident was announced to the public a day later, the U.S. Navy has said it’s unclear where the voice came from. In the videotape released by the Pentagon on Jan. 8, the screen goes black at the very end and the voice can be heard, distancing it from the scenes on the water.

“We don’t know for sure where they came from,” said Cmdr. Lydia Robertson, spokeswoman for 5th Fleet in Bahrain. “It could have been a shore station.”

While the threat — “I am coming to you. You will explode in a few minutes” — was picked up during the incident, further jacking up the tension, there’s no proof yet of its origin. And several Navy officials have said it’s difficult to figure out who’s talking.
“Based on my experience operating in that part of the world, where there is a lot of maritime activity, trying to discern [who is speaking on the radio channel] is very hard to do,” Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead told Navy Times during a brief telephone interview today.

Indeed, the voice in the audio sounds different from the one belonging to an Iranian officer shown speaking to the cruiser Port Royal over a radio from a small open boat in the video released by Iranian authorities. He is shown in a radio exchange at one point asking the U.S. warship to change from the common bridge-to-bridge channel 16 to another channel, perhaps to speak to the Navy without being interrupted.

Further, there’s none of the background noise in the audio released by the U.S. that would have been picked up by a radio handset in an open boat.

So with Navy officials unsure and the Iranians accusing the U.S. of fabrications, whose voice was it? In recent years, American ships operating in the Middle East have had to contend with a mysterious but profane voice known as the “Filipino Monkey,” likely more than one person, who listens in on ship-to-ship radio traffic and then jumps on the net shouting insults and jabbering vile epithets.

Navy women — a helicopter pilot hailing a tanker, for example — who are overheard on the radio are said to suffer particularly degrading treatment.

Several Navy ship drivers interviewed by Navy Times are raising the possibility that the Monkey, or an imitator, was indeed featured in that video.

Rick Hoffman, a retired captain who commanded the cruiser Hue City and spent many of his 17 years at sea in the Gulf was subject to the renegade radio talker repeatedly, often without pause during the so-called “Tanker Wars” of the late 1980s.

“For 25 years there’s been this mythical guy out there who, hour after hour, shouts obscenities and threats,” he said. “He could be tied up pierside somewhere or he could be on the bridge of a merchant ship.”

And the Monkey has stamina.

“He used to go all night long. The guy is crazy,” he said. “But who knows how many Filipino Monkeys there are? Could it have been a spurious transmission? Absolutely.”

Furthermore, Hoffman said radio signals have a way of traveling long distances in that area. “Under certain weather conditions I could hear Bahrain from the Strait of Hormuz.”

Cmdr. Jeff Davis, a Navy spokesman at the Pentagon, could not say if the voice belonged to the heckler.

“It’s an international circuit and we’ve said all along there were other ships and shore stations in the area,” he said.

When asked if U.S. officials considered whether the threats came from someone besides the Iranians when releasing the video and audio, Roughead said: “The reason there is audio superimposed over the video is it gives you a better idea of what is happening.”

Similarly, Davis said the audio was part of the “totality” of the situation and helped show the “aggressive behavior.”

Another former cruiser skipper said he thought the Monkey might be behind the audio threats when he first heard them earlier this week.

“It wouldn’t have surprised me at all,” he said. “There’s all kinds of chatter on Channel 16. Anybody with a receiver and transmitter can hear something’s going on. It was entirely plausible and consistent with the radio environment to interject themselves and make a threatening comment and think they’re being funny.”

This former skipper also noted how quiet and clean the radio “threat” was, especially when radio calls from small boats in the chop are noisy and cluttered.

“It’s a tough environment, you’re bouncing around, moving fast, lots of wind, noise. It’s not a serene environment,” he said. “That sounded like somebody on the beach or a large ship going by.”

He said he and others believe that the Filipino Monkey is comprised of several people, and whoever gets on Channel 16 to heckle instantly gets the monicker.

“It was just a gut feeling, something the merchants did. Guys would get bored, one guy hears it, comes back a year later and does it for himself,” he said. “I never thought it was one, rather it was part of the woodwork.”

The former skipper noted that he warned his crew about hecklers when preparing to transit Hormuz. “I tell them they’ll hear things on there that will be insulting,” he said. “You tell your people that you’ll hear things that are strange, insulting, aggravating, but you need to maintain a professional posture.”

A civilian mariner with experience in that region said the Filipino Monkey phenomenon is worldwide, and has been going on for years.

“They come on and say ‘Filipino Monkey’ in a strange voice. They might say it two or three times. You’re standing watch on bridge and you’re monitoring Channel 16 and all of a sudden it comes over the radio. It can happen anytime. It’s been a joke out there for years.”

While it happens all over the world, it’s more likely to occur around the Strait of Hormuz because there is so much shipping traffic, he said.

Echoes from the Past. . .

The Philippine Merchant Marine Academy stands as one of the oldest and most illustrious institutions in the Philippines today. Originally known as Escuela Nautica de Manila, the PMMA was created by virtue of a Royal Decree issued on January 1, 1820 through the recommendation of the Spanish Consulate of Commerce.

Founded as a school for merchant marine officers, it was inaugurated on April 5 of the same year in its first location inside the Walled City of Intramuros, Manila.

The school was temporarily closed during the Philippine Revolution in 1896 but was reopened by the American authorities on December 15, 1899, recognizing its value as a nautical school. It was called Nautical School of the Philippine Islands.Later it was again renamed to Philippine Nautical School (PNS), under the supervision of US Navy commanders. All facilities, equipment, and other instructional materials were provided by the government in an effort to raise the standard of the institution. But was closed in 1907 due to lack of support.

In 1913, it was reopened, upon the recommendation of the President of the Shipowner's Association, to answer the urgent need for trained merchant marine officers. It was established as a unit of the Philippine School of Arts and Trades.

With war clouds hovering the Pacific, the PNS was transferred from the Department of Education to the Department of National Defense. But the outbreak of World War II did not see the closure of the school rather, it was expanded into a bigger establishment that included not only training of nautical officers but also of marine engineers and ordinary seamen.
After the war the PNS encountered many problems resulting in the deterioration of the school's standard, paving the way for private marine schools to flourish as a business enterprise.

In 1963, Republic Act 3680 converted the PNS into the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA), conferring the degree of Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) major in Navigation and Seamanship or in Steam Engineering and Electricity. In 1997, the PMMA was placed directly under the supervision of the Commission on Higher Education after being under the Department of Transportation and Communication.

Today, the PMMA stands as a pillar among maritime institutions in the country. It has developed the Quality Standard System in compliance with the requirements of the 1995 International Convention on Seafarer's Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW '95) and the Policies, Standards and Guidelines for Maritime Education of the Commission on Higher Education.

The PMMA has not lagged behind in its quest of producing competent and qualified merchant marine officers known the world over. With this Quality Standard System, it is hoped that those who will follow in the footsteps in managing this prestigious institution will be inspired and guided accordingly and continue to improve and build upon this legacy - a world famous merchant marine institution known for quality and good performance with standards of management and training comparable only with the best.
